“Mass” explores the duality of physical and visual mass within contemporary fine art. Physical mass is undeniably heavy, often dominating a space with its weight and presence. In contrast, visual mass plays a subtler role, manipulating perception to create the illusion of solid forms that, in reality, are lightweight and ethereal. This juxtaposition invites viewers to reflect on the nature of what they see and what lies beneath the surface, challenging preconceived notions of substance and weight.
Physical Mass vs. Visual Mass:
In the physical realm, mass is synonymous with heaviness; it is tangible, solid, and unyielding. However, visual mass can be achieved through colour, shape, texture, and arrangement, creating an impactful presence without the corresponding weight. By utilising advanced materials and innovative technologies, my work aims to blur these lines, encouraging an exploration of perception and reality.
Material Innovations:
To realize this vision, I will incorporate cutting-edge lightweight fabrics and advanced carbon fibre technology into my art installations. These materials will serve as the foundation for creating layered resin sculptures and modern art stretcher frames, transforming traditional canvases into dynamic and contemporary works of art.
Lightweight Fabrics:
1. Dyneema®: Known for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, Dyneema® is an ultra-lightweight fabric often used in high-performance applications. It is ideal for creating visually impactful art pieces.
2. Nomex®: A lightweight, flame-resistant fabric that provides durability while remaining easy to manipulate, offering a unique texture and appearance.
3. Ripstop Nylon: This lightweight, synthetic fabric is tear-resistant and highly versatile. Its low weight allows for vibrant colours and patterns.
4. Polyester Spandex Blends: Combining flexibility with strength, these fabrics can create dynamic forms that appear solid yet are light and airy.
Advanced Carbon Fiber Fabric Technology:
1. Prepreg Carbon Fiber: This technology pre-impregnates carbon fibre with resin, creating lightweight and strong composites ideal for sculptural applications.
2. 3D Carbon Fiber Printing: This technique utilizes advanced additive manufacturing and allows for intricate designs and structures while maintaining strength and reducing weight.
3. Carbon Fiber Honeycomb Panels: These panels offer exceptional rigidity and lightweight properties, making them suitable for both sculpture bases and canvas frames.
4. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP): A composite material that combines carbon fibre with polymer resins, providing strength and lightness for various artistic applications.
Concept of Film:
To explore the “Mass” theme further, I envision an immersive installation featuring a cube-shaped film screen (3m x 3m x 3m). This innovative structure will use four projectors to display a continuous, dynamic image of a black mass, creating the illusion of a solid form enveloping the viewer. The interplay of light and shadow will enhance mass perception, inviting observers to question what they are witnessing.
Technical Considerations:
– Projection Technology: Utilizing the latest in 4K or even 8K projection technology will ensure crisp, high-resolution imagery that captivates the viewer’s attention.
– Smart Screens: Incorporating OLED or MicroLED screens can create seamless visuals with deep blacks and vibrant colours, enhancing the mass illusion.
– Interactive Elements: Integrating sensors that respond to viewer movement can add a dynamic quality to the installation, altering the visual experience based on the audience’s presence.
“Mass” explores perception conceptually, inviting viewers to engage with the duality of physical and visual weight. This body of work challenges traditional notions of mass in art by employing advanced materials and innovative technologies. The interplay between what is seen and what is not becomes a focal point, prompting deeper contemplation about the nature of reality and illusion in art. Through this exploration, I aim to create a dialogue between the viewer and the artwork, bridging the gap between the tangible and the ephemeral.
